| Freeview ¯¯¯¯¯ The most popular way to get digital television is with a freeview box (sometimes called Set Top Box) from the High Street. There are no subscription charges and once you have bought the box you will have access to about 30 digital TV channels and around 20 radio stations. Some people buy new televisions with the digital tuner built in called an IDTV (Integrated Digital Television) and you can spot these in the electrical shops because they normally have the ‘digital tick’ logo on the front. So that’s the hardware dealt with but will it work? The best way as a general rule of thumb is to check to see if your aerial is already pointing at the Mendip transmitter (above Wells). This is the main transmitter in the area and the only one that currently carries the digital channels and channel 5 on analogue. There are a vast number of local transmitters around but they were never upgraded to carry channel 5 only transmit channels 1-4 so if you currently get a good picture on all 5 channels then your aerial must be pointing at the Mendip transmitter and your freeview box will most likely work as soon as you plug it in. If you’re one of the unlucky ones then you could have one of two issues. If you don’t get channel 5 (or very badly) and the other 4 channels are a lot clearer then you are on a local transmitter like Bath, Westwood, Box etc and you will need to be moved off the local transmitter. Alternatively you may get all five channels but very badly implying a breakdown of the aerial and cable. In both instances a new aerial will need to be installed and the cost of this will be £125 - £150 for one TV point. The postcode predictor (www.freeview.co.uk) could be used to see if you are in a location that can receive freeview but it can be a tad pessimistic and the best option is just to phone me and ask and I will have a good idea from experience. My digital conversion package costs £200 and involves supplying/fitting a high gain aerial and the installation of a freeview box. The video and television will be setup and the whole installation demonstrated to the customer. Just a point, there are some very unreliable freeview boxes currently on sale. I have been on a few callouts with customers informing me that my aerial has not been working properly. I have had to prove to them that the box they subsequently bought from liddles was faulty not the aerial. For this reason I do prefer it if customers buy the box from me as well so that I can guarantee to lot. | ||||||
